“Family Fun” Wins the RV Memory Contest

In 1969, a blended family of five kids and two parents set off on a camping trip in their new pop-up trailer. Sure, it sounds like an episode of the Brady Bunch, but Mary Capo’s very real recollection of her clan’s fun-filled RV adventures was the top vote-getter in our RV Memory contest, held in celebration of this year’s centennial of the manufactured RV. Mary Capo’s travel tale was one of five finalists selected from hundreds of submissions sent in to RV.net and voted on throughout September. Congratulations go to Mary, who wins 100 gallons of fuel. Mary and her husband have moved up from their original pop-up trailer to a 40-foot motorhome, so the prize should come in handy. Here’s the story of the Capo bunch, along with a groovy photo of Mary and her husband from back in the day. <link to Family Fun copy> Special mention goes to runner-up Chris Baur, an avid RVer who developed an interest in recreational vehicles as a kid growing up in the 1970s with two sisters and... [Read more...]

Manitoba: The return of the snakes

Five species of snakes breed in Manitoba. The red-sided garter snake has the largest range, is the most abundant and is the only species known to occupy large communal dens. Den sites include tree roots, shale cliffs, rock piles, sewers, foundations, animal burrows, rocky outcrops, and sinkholes. Dens contain from a few to over 10,000 snakes. Photo courtesy naturenorth.com Red-sided garter snakes travel great distances every fall to return to their winter dens near Narcisse, Manitoba. Tens of thousands of these snakes migrate back to the limestone crevices that serve as winter homes, using what scientists believe are “scent trails” left by snakes travelling ahead. When fall rolls around, the central Interlake is inundated with these migratory snakes, reports the Winnipeg Free Press. The fall migration back to the Narcisse Snake Dens is currently underway and will continue for a few more weeks. Good snake viewing should occur until at least the end of the first week in October.... [Read more...]

Peace in Pike National Forest

Peace in Pike National Forest

As part of our annual summer RV trip, we had planned a drive through Colorado to see and experience more of this beautiful state. Natives of Wisconsin, we have become enamored of the Rocky Mountains and explore unseen portions of them every chance we get. Given the distance, this practice is usually relegated to our summer trips. This year, a climb we had planned led us into the Pike National Forest. We usually make reservations for all the sites we will need while out on a long trip as we travel more comfortably with a guarantee that we will have a spot to stay. We usually travel during peak summer months which also means the demand for camp and RV sites is at its highest level when we are on the road. We are eagerly awaiting the time when we can be full time travelers and travel at low traffic times as well. It was our trip to the Pike that led us to the Geneva Park Campground. In spite of the fact that they typically have no hookups for our small camper and that showers are not usually... [Read more...]
