Trout Season Begins in San Bernardino County Regional Parks

A great way to combine a camping trip with a little fishing

The leaves are changing, even in Southern California!  The air has a crispness to it and temperatures have begun to fall.  It’s a great time to come camping in San Bernardino County Regional Parks’ campgrounds.  While many states are experiencing cold, and even wet weather, our park locations experience average temperatures in the 70’s during the day, and the low to mid 40’s at night.  Just right to huddle around a campfire.

San Bernardino County Regional Parks offer six facilities with fine camping.  Ranging from scenic views of mountain ranges, to an old West mining town, to camping right on the Colorado River.  When you camp at one of these six facilities there is a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities right outside your tent or RV door.

Camping in San Bernardino

Trout season begins November 11th.  Trout is stocked weekly at the following camping locations:  Prado Regional Park, Chino; Yucaipa Regional Park, Yucaipa, and Mojave Narrows Regional Park, Victorville.  Each month there is a stocking of Sierra Bow and trophy sized fish in addition to the regular trout that fills the lakes.   Trout season also means trout derbies.  A series of five derbies is held from November 20th through March 12, 2011.  Each of the camping parks listed above will host one of those derbies:  January 8, 2011, Yucaipa Regional Park; February 5, Prado Regional Park; and March 12, Mojave Narrows Regional Park.  Anglers cast for up to 50 prizes in cash and merchandise for catching the largest trout in the fastest time.

Once you’ve caught your fish, here is a fast and easy recipe to enjoy your catch at your campsite.

Ingredients:

  • fresh trout, any kind
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 small onion, sliced

Preparation:A fisherman casts into a lake

Clean the fish. Leaving the fish whole, stuff the insides with butter, salt and pepper, and as many onions as will fit. Place stuffed trout on buttered foil and wrap up. Place over fire for 7-10 minutes. Open the foil pack, peel the skin off, and enjoy.

If you like to fish and camp, it is worth the trip to visit one of the above listed locations during trout season.  Reservations may be booked online at www.sbcountyparks.com You are able to choose the park and view your potential campsite before booking.

San Bernardino County Regional Parks are equipped with dump stations, restrooms, hot showers, fire rings and grills, picnic tables and group shelters.  And there are lots of other options for family recreation at each of the locations. To learn more about these and our other fine sites visit www.sbcounty.gov/parks.
