America’s Mid-Atlantic region is home to stunning mountains, rolling hills and charming towns where key events from United States history unfolded. Families will find this and more when they stay at campgrounds in this eastern area.

Give your kids an education in government by staying at Cherry Hill Park (pictured), College Park, Maryland, just a short drive from Washington, D.C.

History is well preserved in Pennsylvania, where family members can visit quintessentially American battlefields and historic sites. Stay at Artillery Ridge Camping Resort, Gettysburg, minutes from the site of the 1863 Civil War battle that turned the tide for the Union. Guests here can ride horses and can gain free admission to the Battlefield Diorama. You can also stay at Gettysburg Campground, a full-facility, family campground along beautiful Marsh Creek.

Learn how chocolate is made when staying at Hershey Highmeadow Campground, in Hershey, a short jaunt from the rides and attractions at Hersheypark. Lake-In-Wood Resort in Bowmansville offers unique family camping in Lancaster County, home to the Amish. At Otter Lake Camp-Resort in Stroudsburg, guests can romp on 300 wooded acres with a 60-acre private lake and no-license fishing along with lots of planned activities. Like its namesake, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Camp Resort At Shangri-La in Milton boasts amazing play structures, comfortable accommodations and a tranquil environment.

Virginia isn’t just for lovers. Families will enjoy the Old Dominion as well, especially Bethpage Camp Resort on the Chesapeake Bay in Urbanna. Here, an Extreme H2OOOOOO Waterpark, crabbing, marina and boat ramp, charter boat, pools and sandy beaches will provide days of fun. Grey’s Point Camp in Topping is a waterfront resort with breathtaking views of the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay. Here you’ll find a complete recreational facility with pools, Make A Splash Waterpark, sandy beaches, marina and boat ramp.
