Family Camping Destination – the Adventure District in OKC!

DSC_0798_288wWe have spent the last 2 weeks in Oklahoma City.  Even though we spent 3 weeks here last spring, we were volunteering with tornado cleanup efforts, and didn’t have a chance to explore the city much.  This year we have scoped out the best in family friendly stops here, and have found that OKC is a great place for a family camping destination!

OKC has an area in town called the Adventure District, which is full of fun stops, all within a few blocks of each other.

We had a great time visiting the OKC Zoo, where we spent 4 hours discovering the extensive grounds that house nearly 1900 animals.  In addition to large animal exhibits, the zoo offers several aviaries, butterfly and botanical gardens, and has great play areas as well as offering train rides and a carousel.

The kids really enjoyed participating in a simple scavenger hunt which netted them some fun treats!

Right next to the OKC Zoo, is Science Museum Oklahoma.  This incredible science museum is fun for all ages, and has several very unique areas, including a Crime Scene Investigation area, , and a Segway course!!!!  My favorite was a slightly bizarre ‘Wunderkammer’ (German for cabinet of wonder) section of the museum.   Focused around a group of paintings by a local artist, this section was made up of beautiful vintage glass cabinets; each was full of novelties that all tied to a painting, which was also displayed in the cabinet.  The wunderkammer is a mixture of art, science, and history, and mimics the aristocratic museums of the 16th century.  SMO had so much to do that we spent 5 fun filled hours discovering and playing here, and we were still finding new things on our way out the door!

DSC_0115_115wWhile you are downtown, also check out the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame, the Remington Park (horsetrack), and the National Cowboy Museum.  The Nat Cowboy Museum is an incredible facility that features all things cowboy… from western art to western movie stars to the rodeo scene.  Very family friendly, the museum features a fun, full-sized western town Main Street area, and the kids have a whole building, the Children’s Corral, to themselves!  Plan to stay for at least 2 hours!
Near the Adventure District, you will also find the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum, and the Oklahoma Railway Museum (free).  The Railway Museum hosts A Day out with Thomas (the tank engine) every year (in Aug. & Sept. this year).
 Located nearby is the highly rated Twin Fountain RV Park (you can find other OKC RV parks on the Good Sam Campground Finder);
it’s convenient location means that you could spend a week discovering the Adventure District without driving more than a few miles from your RV!DSC_0070_070w The Adventure District is a family friendly meca of things to keep a family busy, and is worthy of being a family camping destination on its own!!!
