Hoby
Hoby is a full-time RVer--my wife, dog, and I have lived in our Motorhome since October of 2007. I consider Albuquerque, New Mexico as home, but stay on the road and have an RV lot/coach house in Mission, Texas (Retama Village). I may not be the best source of information about "camping" since I do not camp--we like to have all the luxuries of home, so that will influence the tone of my posts.

Billy the Kid and Laura Bush

As we travel from Albuquerque to the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, we have some favorite places that we like to stop.  One of those is the Hacienda RV Resort in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  We always try to ensure we are there for the Friday evening margaritas (okay, our real goal is to ensure we go through El Paso on a Sunday, but that seems to always ensure we are there for margaritas). Slow Cooker; Crock Pot

Slow Cooker; Crock Pot

(Photo Caption: Slow Cooker) Since moving into our motor home full-time, the slow cooker has become our most important appliance in the kitchen.  We have found that putting ingredients into the slow cooker in the morning and then going about our day of exploration and returning home to an excellent meal is a great way to save time. We’ve also been surprised at the variety of things you can do in... [Read more]

A Culinary Tour of the East Coast

A Culinary Tour of the East Coast

I had a ton of ideas on what to post during “Food Week,” but a story helped me decide.  Some friends of ours asked what we liked best about each part of the country as we traveled, and our answer was all about the foods we discovered.  They said this was odd because most people talk about the climate.  My response was, “since we follow the weather, the climate is similar everywhere we go,... [Read more]

Sky City: A Living History

Sky City: A Living History

It is difficult to imagine, but near Old Route 66 (as well as I-40) about one hour west of Albuquerque is the oldest continuously inhabited site in North America—Acoma Pueblo.  Being from Albuquerque, we have often thought about visiting Acoma Pueblo, and have even tried a few times in the past; however, there are some days each year the Pueblo is closed to the public, and we were unlucky enough... [Read more]

Veteran’s Day and Camping

Veteran’s Day and Camping

(Photo Caption: Veteran) As a veteran I’m always surprised at how many vets I meet in the campgrounds and RV parks.  It seems that camping and RVing attracts veterans for some reason.  I know I was pleasantly surprised at how many submarine terms are used by RVers.  Of course, I also remember the RV salesman telling me I should rent an RV for a few weeks to determine if I can handle living... [Read more]

Luxury in Sin City

Luxury in Sin City

(Photo Caption: Las Vegas Motorcoach Resort sign) While a large number of campers have the goal of getting back to nature, for us full-timers there are times when you prefer a bit of luxury.  We found that little bit of luxury at the Las Vegas Motorcoach Resort (LVMCR).  LVMCR describes itself as “an Exclusive Class ‘A’ Resort.”  This resort is 41 acres and provides over 400 large sites,... [Read more]

Social Network

Social Network

(Photo Caption: Early Social Network) I was just thinking about what a social network is—basically people sharing information (often too much information) between with things in common.  When I thought of it that way, I realized that campers have had social networks a long time.  Think about what camping was all about.  For many people camping was about getting together with others, away from... [Read more]

“This is the right place.”

“This is the right place.”

According to the history we’ve read, “this is the right place” is what Brigham Young said when he entered into the Salt Lake Valley.  I’m not sure what it was like back then, but today we agree with that emotion.  With the mountains and the Great Salt Lake as backdrops, Salt Lake City (SLC) is in a beautiful setting.  [Read more]

Full-Time Surprises

Full-Time Surprises

(Photo Caption: Motor Home) We’ve been full-timing a few years now and have begun to feel pretty comfortable in the lifestyle and cannot imagine not being full-timers.  We spent several years planning for the change in lifestyle—doing tons of research.  Even with all that, we still ran into some surprises. Here is a list of our biggest surprises: You have to have a schedule All ads for campgrounds... [Read more]

What a View! McCall RV Resort

What a View! McCall RV Resort

Sometimes you are really surprised by what you find; this was the case for us when we went to the McCall RV Resort in McCall, Idaho.  As one of the regular guests said, it is like Idaho’s version of Lake Tahoe.  As we pulled into the city of McCall, we were impressed with how pretty the town was and the beautiful views of Payette Lake. (Photo Caption: Northfork Lodge at McCall RV Resort) When we... [Read more]
